Tips For Focusing On Today

We’re constantly bombarded with distractions — emails, text messages, and social media notifications — all vying for our attention. And, it can be difficult to focus when we’re constantly being pulled in different directions.

Not to mention, it’s also easy to get caught up in past and worry about the future, which can make it difficult to focus on and enjoy the present. 

But by making a conscious effort to focus on the present moment, we can learn to appreciate the good things in our lives and make the most out of every day. ???

Why living in the present is important?

Living in the present is important because when we focus on the day, we’re able to appreciate the good things in our lives and make the most out of every day. 

When we’re constantly worrying about the past or future, we miss out on all the wonderful things that are happening right now. 

With that being said, here are 8 tips for focusing on today:

1. Wake up each day with a positive attitude.

Every morning you have a choice to either wake up with a negative or positive attitude. And, while it may not seem like a big deal, the attitude you start your day with sets the tone and has a significant impact on your focus and productivity.

If you wake up with a negative attitude, chances are you’re going to have a hard time focusing on anything throughout the day. On the other hand, if you wake up with a positive attitude, you’re more likely to be able to focus on being productive and making the most out of your day.

With that being said, having a positive attitude doesn’t mean that you have to be happy all the time, but it does mean that starting your day with a positive attitude can help you be mindful of the present moment to succeed in meeting your goals for the day.

Take a few minutes to yourself as soon as you wake up to give yourself a pep talk, meditate, do some stretches, or whatever else helps you get into a positive mindset.

2. Set goals for the day. 

Part of living in the present is having a clear idea of what you’re going to do for the day which is why it’s important to set goals.

By taking the time to set goals for each day, you can stay focused on the present to help you make the most of your time and increase your chances of achieving your long-term goals.

Start by making a list of everything that you need to do and what you want to accomplish by the end of the day.

Then, prioritize your tasks by order of importance and make sure to schedule time for breaks. And, finally, take things one step at a time and focus on completing each task before moving on to the next.

3. But follow the 20/80 rule.

While it’s important to have goals for each day, it’s also important not to overwhelm yourself with too much to do — something we are all guilty of.

To avoid this, follow the 20/80 rule which states that 20% of your effort should result in 80% of your outcome. In other words, focus on the most important tasks that will have the biggest impact; the rest can wait or be done another day.

For example, if you’re working on a project, focus on the most important tasks that need to be completed in order to achieve your desired outcome. And, don’t worry about the small details or things that can be done later down the road. Not only will this help you stay focused on what’s important, but it will also help you avoid feeling overwhelmed and stressed out.

4. Create a routine and stick to it.

Whether you’re trying to establish a new workout regimen or simply get to bed on time, it’s no secret that sticking to a routine can be difficult. But, when it comes to focusing, routines are key.

Creating a daily routine increases focus and efficiency and reduces anxiety and stress because they provide a sense of structure and predictability in an otherwise chaotic world.

Routines also minimize decision fatigue — the more decisions you have to make, the harder it is to focus — and can increase your productivity by freeing up your brainpower to focus on other things.

With that being said, routines don’t have to be anything fancy or complicated, it can be as simple as waking up at the same time each day, taking a break at the same time each day, or working for a certain number of hours before taking the rest of the day off.

To create a routine that works for you, start by brainstorming all of the activities or tasks that you need or want to do on a daily basis. Then, figure out when you’re going to do each task and make sure to schedule some flexibility. And, finally, stick to your routine as much as possible, and don’t be afraid to adjust it as needed.

5. But do something new or different each day — even if it’s something small. 

As much as I’m all for creating a routine and sticking to it, I also think it’s important to do something new or different each day; otherwise, life can become quite boring and you can lose focus.

It doesn’t have to be anything big or exciting, it can be as simple as taking a different route to work, trying a new recipe for dinner, or reading a new book; the key is to break out of your normal routine and just mix things up a bit so that you’re not doing the same thing every day.

It’s important to find a balance between routine and novelty in our lives. By giving yourself something to look forward to each day, you can help yourself focus and stay in the present moment.

6. Practice mindfulness and meditation.

Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment and observing your thoughts and feelings; it’s about being aware of your surroundings and your thoughts and emotions.

While meditation is a tool that involves focusing on your breath and clearing your mind of all other thoughts.

Both mindfulness and meditation can help you to slow down, be less reactive, and make better choices to reduce anxiety and improve your focus, concentration, and overall well-being. So, if you want to be able to focus on your days, practicing mindfulness and meditation is a great place to start.

7. Avoid multitasking at all cost. 

Most of us are guilty of trying to do too many things at once — whether we’re juggling work, family, or social obligations — which is why it can be hard to focus on any one thing.

Multitasking is when we try to do two or more things at the same time; for example, watching TV while working on the computer. And, it has been proven time and time again that multitasking is unproductive.

When we try to focus on more than one thing at a time, our brains have to switch back and forth between tasks this causes our pre-frontal cortex to overload and problem-solving abilities to decrease which leads to errors, decreased efficiency, and productivity, and increased stress and anxiety.

If you’re finding it hard to focus it might be the fact that you’re multitasking; in which case, focus on one thing at a time and give it your full attention. Not only will this help you get the job done more quickly and effectively, but it will also help to prevent burnout.

8. Eliminate distractions.

It’s no secret that we live in a world filled with distractions. From the constant barrage of notifications on our phones to the never-ending stream of news and entertainment, there’s always something seeking our attention which is why it can be difficult to focus on what’s important.

When we’re constantly bombarded with new information, our brains are overstimulated and it becomes really difficult to focus which leads to being scattered and disorganized, struggling to get anything done.

Eliminating distractions is essential to being able to focus and be productive because we give our brains the chance to zero in on the work at hand. 

Start by turning off all notifications on your phone and computer; this will help to prevent you from getting distracted every time there’s a new notification.

Next, create a designated workspace where you can focus on your work without being interrupted.

And, finally, if you find that you can’t seem to focus no matter what you do, it might be worth considering a digital detox; disconnecting from technology and the internet for a period of time to give your brain a much-needed break.

9. Seek professional help; perhaps, you have an undiagnosed condition.

If you’ve tried all of the above and you’re still struggling to focus, it might be time to seek professional help; there could be an underlying condition such as ADHD or anxiety that is making it difficult for you to concentrate.

A professional can identify potential problems and provide tools and strategies and develop a plan to help you address them.
