It's also one of the most important skills for success in today's work environment, where our minds are constantly bombarded with distractions and interruptions.

If you can't focus, you can't get anything done properly and meet either your own or anyone else's expectations.

Here are 5 best ways to build focus and be more productive:

1. Start your day with a plan and schedule your time.

Most people take the morning off from making plans and will instead use this time to catch up on email, surf their favorite websites or socialize with colleagues in the break room.

The problem with this approach is that it's reactive rather than proactive, which means you're giving away your most productive hours before you've even started. 

If instead you take the first hour of your morning to make a plan for your workday and prioritize all the tasks you need to accomplish to stay on schedule, not only will you be amazed at how much you can get done, but how much more motivated and energized you'll feel throughout the day.

2. Don't multitask and take breaks.

It's easy to check your email first thing in the morning but beware of multitasking — and any of these habits as a matter of fact — during any break in work because it takes more times to accomplish tasks when you're switching tasks in the middle of doing them.

If you're processing email, answering phone calls or checking your social media updates, chances are that it will take longer to complete all the tasks and your focus and motivation will start to decline.

Instead, try scheduling a short time (just 10-15 minutes) to check and respond to any urgent emails, on who called and what's going on with social media before you start working.

3. Get enough sleep every night.

Getting enough rest is essential for productivity and well-being, yet most people are leaving it to the end of their priority list. 

When you've gotten up early to make plans for your day, it's tempting to stay up late at night trying to get everything done instead of getting the necessary amount of sleep.

But giving in to your craving for more work and pushing yourself into later hours will inevitably lead to errors, mistakes and tiredness that will make you lose focus and eventually affect your performance in other areas.

4. Change your environment in order to change your mindset.

It's easy to get stuck in a rut at work, but you can change your focus and productivity by purposefully changing something about your physical environment.

For example, if you're working on a project that requires lots of research, try moving over to the library or another quiet place where there are no distractions.

5. Be positive and optimistic.

People who are negative always see the glass half empty instead of half full!


Negativity can be extremely contagious so try to surround yourself with optimistic people at work, have a positive mental attitude and keep an open mind.
